In 1914 a new Guiding section for girls under 11 was formed. They were initially called Rosebuds and renamed as Brownies in 1915. In 2014, Brownies celebrated 100 years since Brownies started.
Girlguiding celebrated with The Big Brownie Birthday which brought exciting opportunities and events to nearly a quarter of a million Brownies in the UK. The UK Big Brownie Birthday celebrations started on 1 January 2014 and finished at the end of the 2014 school summer holidays. Girlguiding in the Forest of Dean held many celebrations and Mitcheldean brownies had an amazing year of celebrations.
As with any birthday, we started the year with a party. And parties always need cake. Actually there were many cakes of different styles, sizes and materials during the year. Here are some.

In April it was time for the long awaited Big Brownie Birthday Stayaway, which had been two years in the planning, and we joined in with almost 1,000 Brownies and their leaders from all over Gloucestershire and 'took over' the entire site at PGL Liddington (near Swindon). The weekend started with an amazing party evening - almost 40 different party rooms for the girls to explore: a magician, cake decorating, mosaic making, disco, face painting, armpit fudge, Then the girls had two days of taking part in eight adventurous activities, e.g. climbing, abseiling, zip wire, canoeing, fencing, rafting, tunnels, Jacob's ladder, mountain biking, crate stack challenge. Also a traditional campfire, loads of food and cake! .
